Hi there! I wanted to share with you my latest sewing project… What a challenge this one was! Even with this amazing tutorial I found on Pinterest, I still made 4 prototypes until I found the right stiffness and size (I wanted the basket to stand up and not be too floppy!). The tutorial I found called for fusible fleece… which was $30 per meter at Fabricland…. um no! Especially, not after having spent $40 on fabric already! So I ended using some quilting batting I had left over from another project and some heavy interfacing for the bottom ($7/meter)… much more affordable! I also ended buying quite heavy canvas at Fabricland after the canvas fabric at Michael’s ended up being too thin.
I just love how this turned out! And we plan on filling it up every year with 3 things: something to read, something to wear (outdoors) and something to play (outdoors)… and maybe a bit of chocolate too? Happy Easter!
Here’s what you’ll need for this project:
- 0.5m of canvas fabric for the exterior
- 0.5m of fun crafting cotton fabric for the exterior
- 5″ x 10″ piece of heaving interfacing (bottom)
- 0.25m of quilting batting (sheet)
- sewing supplies
The first step is to cut all your pieces! It took me a while to find the perfect size! The first basket, with the dimensions in the turorial was the size of a tote bag! The next one was too small. So here are the dimensions I found PERFECT!
- 10″ x 15″ rectangles of canvas (x2)
- 10″ x 15″ rectangles of cotton (x2)
- 4,5″ x 13″ rectangle of canvas for the handle
- 15″ x 7″ rectangles of quilting batting for the sides
- 5″ x 10″ piece of heaving interfacing for the bottom.
Next, I just followed the instructions on here: https://www.thestatenislandfamily.com/how-to-sew-a-fabric-easter-basket/ Here’s a recap of the important parts, and my additions!
I just loved filling Little Miss’ basket with goodies! Here’s what’s inside!
- wooden egg shakers
- nylon play scarves
- touchy feely Usborne book..love these! We have a few in French and in Englis!
- a plush rabbit (given by a studen last year!)
- a straw hat for Spring (from a neighbour!)
